I don't really know the details of the mechanical issues they are facing, but there's been much discussion on local sports talk radio about whether the new stadium will be available on time. I think they've already cancelled a soccer game that was planned for late August.

Smart move to leave the Georgia Dome standing for the time being. It's only 25 years old.

They've already removed the turf, but it could be reinstalled. I would think that parking will be a nightmare there, one way or the other.

Way Too Early 2017 SEC Football Predictions

Post #24 by NightSwimmer » 2 months ago

It's still too early for me to consider this to be my final draft, but at this moment, I think that the following list would be a good starting point for a Preseason Top 10:

1. Clemson
2. Alabama
3. USC
4. Florida State
5. Oklahoma
6. Ohio State
7. Washington
8. Michigan
9. Wisconsin
10. Auburn

I don't genuinely expect Clemson to retain their top spot for very long, but they are the defending National Champs, so they stay at #1 in my list until they lose. Auburn has disappointed for the past few years, but if that QB they got from Baylor pans out, they could be Bama's greatest challenge in the SEC West. LSU also has an opportunity to compete for the SEC Championship this year. I think that FSU has the best team in the ACC, and who knows what Louisville will do? They had a big win over FSU last year, but finished with a string of 3 embarrassing losses. If USC starts this season playing like they did at the end of last season, then they could easily be headed for a Top 4 finish. Washington appears to me to be the second best team in the PAC, but they lost some key players from last year's squad. Oklahoma State had a decent season last year, but I see the Sooners as the best bet for the Big 12 to make it to the CFP. The B1G had several good teams, and no great teams last year. I don't really see this year being any different. The winner of the Big Ten Conference Championship is probably in, unless they have 2 or more losses. I would expect the conference champ to be either OSU, Michigan, Wisconsin or Penn State.

I might reconsider after watching the Spring games, but this is how it currently looks based upon the results of the 2016 season, new recruits, NCAA compliance issues and coaching changes.

How does your favorite conference stack up?

The results of the SEC Media Days rankings are in:

EASTERN DIVISION
1. Georgia
2. Florida
3. Tennessee
4. South Carolina
5. Kentucky
6. Vanderbilt
7. Missouri

WESTERN DIVISION
1. Alabama
2. Auburn
3. LSU
4. Arkansas
5. Texas A&M
6. Mississippi State
7. Ole Miss

SEC CHAMPION
Alabama 217
Auburn 11
Georgia 6
LSU 3
Florida 3
South Carolina 1
Vanderbilt 1
Arkansas 1

They don't do an overall conference ranking, but they do predict the conference champion. The 1st place votes for South Carolina, Vandy and Arkansas obviously can't be taken seriously. These were "homer" votes from in-state sportswriters.

Mississippi State got a lot less respect than I had given them. They have an excellent quarterback returning from last year. Then again, the quarterback position is predicted to be much improved throughout the conference this year.

NCAA preseason college football poll 7-15-17 Bleacher Report
1. Alabama
2. USC
3. Ohio State
4. Florida State
5. Clemson
6. Penn State
7. Oklahoma State
8. Washington
9. Michigan
10. Georgia

Interesting rearrangement of last year's contenders.

ND not in the top 25 preseason. After last seasons 4–8 regular-season record, they don't deserve to be.

Oklahoma lost some stature when they lost their Head Coach. I'm not sold on either Oklahoma State or Penn State. I don't know what to make of Georgia. They still have no depth at O Line. That was always a weakness with Mark Richt's recruiting.

That poll is shaped by the last 4 to 5 weeks of last season -- you could say the rise of the big 10 relative to other conferences.

I don't know anything about where Clemson stands as far as returning players go. Southern Cal also turned on and into a completely different team than the one that got spanked by Alabama in the season opener.

Georgia's had off seasons since 2012/2013 when they were nearly as good as Alabama. I think it was those years.

Yeah. Georgia played a good game against Bama in the SECCG in 2012. They ended the season with a win over Nebraska in the Citrus Bowl.

I noticed the other day that Houston Nutt was suing Ole Miss for defamation.

Today, Head Coach Hugh Freeze resigned: Hugh Freeze Resigns as Ole Miss Head Coach After Reported Call to Escort Service | Bleacher Report
